There will always be unique obstacles when working with pre-existing buildings. For our project with Harken Health, we were tasked with putting a new healthcare facility inside of two old, conjoined buildings. Aside from tackling the aesthetics of the outside, our environmental testing analysis discovered asbestos and lead in the interior that the prior owner hadn’t disclosed. With a government-mandated deadline and no time to waste, we got straight to work.
Following protocol, we immediately took action to ensure the lead was removed and the asbestos was abated from the building appropriately. After the lengthy process was complete, we worked around the clock on the interior and exterior of the two buildings to perfect the fluid design that would join them together. Our team gave special attention to the materials used in the build to ensure stunning results. With the construction complete and little time to spare before our client’s deadline, our team even helped move furniture into the space to make sure they were ready.
Despite some challenges along the way, Harken Health was able to open its doors on time. Chicago residents now have access to a clean and beautifully designed healthcare facility that accommodates patients from all over the city.
